OWNING YOUR BREAKTHROUGH with Don Carpenter
Why Breakthroughs Slip Away
SPEAKER_01: I'm going to minister about breakthroughs in our walk. I want you to look at owning your breakthrough. Sometimes people get breakthroughs, and a week or two later, they're right back in the same situation, and it might even be worse than what it was before. People will say, I don't want this to be happening in my life, and I need to have victory over this. I don't need to keep falling into the same old trap. We need to own our breakthroughs.
David Becomes King In Israel
SPEAKER_01: Turn with me to second book of Samuel, the fifth chapter. This is where David becomes king of Israel. We read the stories about David, and the one that always comes through most people's mind is him slaying the mighty giant Goliath. But that's just part of his journey. And you've got more than one story. You got more than one story to tell. When your life is over, and your young grandchildren, if you have them, are family and friends, they will come around and listen, and you'll be able to tell them about your great breakthroughs.
SPEAKER_01: Samuel chapter five. Then came all the tribes of Israel to David onto Hebron. Twelve tribes. And spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. We're like you.
SPEAKER_01: We have the same composition. Our physical nature is the same. When we are believers in Christ, it's the same. It doesn't that one person has this savior, and the other one has a different kind of a savior. We all have the same savior, Jesus. And when we get those breakthroughs, we hear, we get a message, somebody ministers faith to us, and we hear it. And we want to say, Yes, that's for me. That is my only chance. We're the same. And also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that led us out and brought us into Israel.
SPEAKER_01: And the Lord said to thee, thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and King David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed him king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for forty years. Forty years king. It's quite interesting the first three kings of Israel, Saul, David, and Solomon all reigned forty years. In verse seventeen of Second Samuel chapter five, but when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David, and David heard of it and went down to the hold, the fortress, because he knew that everything was coming against him.
Choose The Voice You Trust
SPEAKER_01: We are not naive. We are not unaware that when we serve God that our that the enemy that we fought all our lives will come against us. The Philistines will gather and we're thinking, has God made a protection that can help me against such things? In verse 17, the Philistines heard. And it also says that David heard. Just look at the Philistines heard, and David heard.
SPEAKER_01: It's not so much the fact that everybody is hearing. Who is speaking when you hear? Who is the voice of authority? What is that voice? The Philistines wanted nothing to do with the God of Israel. The Philistines were a heathen, they were a barbaric, they were a warring society. But when we become a Christian, God feeds us. And I believe that God directs us. I believe that when we seek counsel, I believe that God will direct us on who we talk to. Because I want to, just like you, I want to hear from God.
SPEAKER_01: David is a brand new king, and he has inherited all of Saul's issues and problems, and he's never been a king before, and he's thinking I'm going to need direction. You'll note there that what he does, he listened to the brethren. They came to him and they speak to him. He allowed that group and type of people to speak into his life. I trust that you are mature enough. And I know there's probably people listening to me today who are brand new believers. But it is good to know that when you can listen to a seasoned Christian, a seasoned believer who walks with God, that when they speak, that you can weigh the words and the counsel that they give.
SPEAKER_01: But may I say be careful the voice that you listen to, because it will make the difference of whether you are going to be victorious or you're going to have a life filled with many heartaches, or whether you're going to walk in victory. I cannot emphasize that much stronger. You know what David heard? He heard that God was going to be his defender. Many times in my Christian walk, I have had to have the mind of the Lord on many things. And I've been come against a matter of fact. Sometimes I'd be attacked and I'd be shocked of where the attack would come from, or even what the attack was about, or what this thing was in their mind that they were imagining.
SPEAKER_01: God is and has been my defense.
SPEAKER_01: You got the breakthrough, not the enemy going to break through onto you. You have broke out of and you are free, and you're moving forward.
The Enemy Regroups In The Valley
SPEAKER_01: In verse 18 of 2 Samuel chapter 5, the Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephan. This valley, when it says that they spread themselves there, they got into that and they were invigorated in this valley. Because this valley was an ancient valley of where there was a tribe of giants lived. They invigorated themselves in their own greatness. They invigorated themselves, the Philistines did. And no doubt they told war stories and they talked about the power of their great people and what a great fighting group they are.
SPEAKER_01: And the more they talk about it, the stronger they are becoming by the moment. And any young, youthful soldier that's a part of their military listens to these stories and they take them on and they invigorate themselves. And when you get your breakthrough and you're walking in that and you're satisfied when it happened, that it was God that gave you this victory. Do not let the war sounds of the enemy tell you we are going to overtake you and you will never have victory. You're so thick you'll never get it, and so on.
SPEAKER_01: Don't listen to that kind of rhetoric.
Giants That Live In Your Mind
SPEAKER_01: Numbers chapter 13, verse 33. There's a word here I think it's worth me looking this up and sharing this with you today. We have a lot of giants in our lives, and practically all of them are in our minds of what these giants will do. We feel like they're so much stronger than me. Remember when the reading about when the children of Israel went out into the wilderness for forty years and they crossed the Jordan, and the new land that they came into.
SPEAKER_01: In this new land, in their eyes they saw the people as giants. Numbers thirteen, thirty-three. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants. Look at this. And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. They're these tall giants in walled cities, skilled in warfare, and we a desert people, forty years wandering, and we're just mere grasshoppers, and they look at us as such. Those giants that come to your mind and try to destroy you, have you ever seen them physically?
SPEAKER_01: Have you? Things that you fear, have you seen, have you had any evidence that this thing is going to take you out? Let's talk spiritually here. Let's just talk about the spiritual, because this is the kind of warfare that's going on. If you in your own mind think that you are defeated, and in your own mind you think that there's no way you can have the victory, and in your own mind you see yourself as being helpless and hopeless, you are defeated, and you will fall back. But when the enemy comes against you, because always remember this greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.
SPEAKER_01: And that he is Jesus. And when he says, I will never leave you and I will never forsake you, he meant that. And when he says that I will make a way where there is no way, he means that.
SPEAKER_01: Not what the giant of fear has to say. Not what the giant that is his army that is called anxiety, not that giant that will mass itself against you, the one that causes you sleepless nights and torment. It hasn't happened, but you think it's going to happen. And without realizing it, you fall back into ways that'll make you comfortable because you're feeling weary from the battle. You're feeling like I don't know if I can handle this right now. If you've got the battle going on right now, you have no choice but to face it.
SPEAKER_01: Whether you are ready or not, I'm trying to help you here. David is now king, and all the Philistines have gathered against him.
Ask God For Battle Strategy
SPEAKER_01: So in verse 19 of 2 Samuel chapter 5, and David inquired of the Lord. Why would anybody inquire of the Lord? Already a believer. I already believe there's a God. Why would I inquire? Because God has a way for you to beat the enemy in every battle that you encounter. There is a way. Seek God on every battle. So he inquired of the Lord. He said to the Lord, Shall I go up to the Philistines? Wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto David, Remember, when you are praying, wait for the answer.
SPEAKER_01: The Lord said unto David, Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand. Remember, there are tens of thousands. Just like you have tens of thousands of thoughts that come against you. We all do. To hear God say, go on, take them out.
SPEAKER_01: Lord says, Yeah, go on, take them out. I can do this. This is mine. You own it, it's yours. The enemy can't take that from you. What you've just heard from God, no man can take that from you. That's yours. You're gonna go up and you're gonna take it. You're going to own it. And by owning it, you act like you have it. You talk like you have it. You walk. You think everything. There's no doubt there. I've got it. I have overcome. I have got the answer to the thing that I am facing. You inquire of the Lord, and the Lord says, Go on.
SPEAKER_01: He didn't say go hide. He didn't say run from. Go up and meet them.
SPEAKER_01: And like you know about most fears that you have, when you face it, it's not there. It was an illusion. It was a smoke screen that the enemy tried to put there to torment you as much as possible. And also to hope that you would never have the victory. Hallelujah. In Deuteronomy chapter 1, verse 21, there's some of these scriptures that are just so powerful. I have to share it with you. Behold, the Lord thy God. This is the hands of the God that you've placed your life in. Behold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee.
SPEAKER_01: Impossess it or make it your own. It's mine. I belong here. This is for me. Hallelujah. That word can be so encouraging. Down now into verse twenty.
Possessor Of Breakthroughs By Faith
SPEAKER_01: David came to Baal Perazim.
SPEAKER_01: And David and said, The Lord hath broken forth upon my enemies before me as the breach. This was my breakthrough, that word breach. This is what I broke through. That word right here means Baal Perizim. The meaning of that valley is possessor of breaches or possessor of breakthroughs. That's what that means. That's where our battle is finally fought. We've got it. You've looked for it, you've got it, and now that you've got it, nobody, the enemy doesn't want you to have it because this that you now possess will give you strength to stand against them.
SPEAKER_01: Own your breakthrough. You've sought God, you've prayed, you're believing God for your miracle, you've got it. Own it. Make it. The Lord hath broken through my enemies before me. See, your enemy has no defense against you when you stand and walk by faith. You have legal ownership of your breakthrough. It is yours. The enemy cannot come and say, I am now going to force you back into this situation. Fear, unbelief, anxiety, hopelessness, nobody loves you. You walk alone, people think that terrible, wild things about you, all of those things, or if any of those things attack you, own the valley, own the breakthrough that you are in.
SPEAKER_01: That word own it means no, I will not listen to that kind of mentality. I will not set myself up to be defeated. I will not help the enemy to destroy me. I believe God. I have prayed for this, I have dedicated myself for this, I have testified to this, I will own it.
Stand Your Ground And Defend It
SPEAKER_01: 2 Samuel 23, 12, stood his ground and defended it. That's what you have to do. This is territory that you have gained. You're going to stand your ground and you're going to defend it. In 1 Corinthians 15, 57. Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Hallelujah. And then 1 John 5, 4. Here's the victory. People talk about the victory. Here's the victory. This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. That's the victory. The victory is, people might say, I've I had a toothache and I can't and I came against that, and I can tell you I got no more.
SPEAKER_01: And I got the victory over that pain. The victory is that you believe the word of God, and the victory is that you stand in faith every time. That's the victory.
SPEAKER_01: And I fully intend to walk in victory.
SPEAKER_01: Circumstance is not going to move me. No. Because that's a false flag. That is a vapor. That's not going to, that has no strength. I'm not going to allow that.
SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to become a grasshopper, in other words. When David was made king and the brethren said, We'll stand with you. There were battles yet to be fought. And when they went out against the very first battle after he became king of Israel, it seemed like almost immediately the enemy came against him. He says to them things like this Remove all negative, doubtful thoughts. Because if you maintain them, they're going to take you away from the victory. You're not going to be able to own your breakthrough.
SPEAKER_01: So don't allow them. It is said that if you listen, absorb and take it all in what they have to say against you, it only takes ten people to discourage you, and you will give up. Takes ten. Give or tea.
SPEAKER_01: When you have the Lord and you believe everything He says, that one that speaks to your spirit, you have the victory. I'm going to close with this scripture.
Take Every Thought Captive
SPEAKER_01: 2 Corinthians chapter 10, verses 3 through 7. For though we walk in the flesh, remember, flesh is all about dying. Moment you're born, you start to die. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. Because the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God. And we are and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
SPEAKER_01: Christ's word, that that thought you were taking you captive, you will not come against us.
SPEAKER_01: You are looking at things that are outwardly. So, your mindset's so important. We stand together. We are the mighty army. God bless you.
