Nine Gifts And A Focus On Tongues
SPEAKER_01: In 1 Corinthians chapter 12, there are nine gifts listed. And today I'm going to minister on the gift of tongues, the interpretation of tongues. In Acts chapter 1, verse 8, Jesus said, You shall receive power. After that, the Holy Ghost has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me.
SPEAKER_01: What kind of power could we possibly receive?
SPEAKER_01: Somebody says, I'm going to walk on water, I'm going to cast out demons, I'm going to do miracles. All of that's wonderful. But do you know to do any of the gift, you have to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and you have to have the gift. You can desire a gift. You can desire and say, I want to do this and I want to be great here. But it has always been my intention and always my understanding that we are placed in the body as it pleases Him.
SPEAKER_01: So each one of the nine gifts of the Spirit gives us great and mighty power in the Spirit. When you move in the gifts of the Spirit, when you were saved and you were filled with the Holy Spirit, and you move in the gifts, that is a witness to the world that Jesus is alive and well in that believer.
Pentecost And The Shock Of Power
SPEAKER_01: Witness is onto me. And it wasn't too many days after that. They gathered in the upper room, 120. They were in the upper room. Came a sound from heaven. They couldn't explain it. The sound. The closest that the author could say it sounded like a roaring wind, rushing wind. We could get all kinds of ideas, but I'm just going to put this out to you today to think about. When the Holy Spirit was coming in, and everybody started going, and they all started talking in tongues and whatnot, and hearing such a force of expression.
SPEAKER_01: They're going to say, This is powerful. And it was.
SPEAKER_01: Matter of fact, some of them tried to get out of the room. And they were upstairs in this room. And 9 o'clock in the morning, they got out into the street, and everybody was astonished. And they said, What kind of a party have these people come from? Look at them. What's going on with these people? And they're going to say, No, no, no. See, you and the world, you understand that the only way you could possibly act like this is if you were under the influence of alcohol. Or now in this day and age, drugs, hallucinary type drugs.
SPEAKER_01: And they said, no, it's only 9 o'clock in the morning. No. What you're seeing and what you're witnessing is what the prophet Joel talked about. God said, I'm going to pour out my spirit upon your sons and your daughters. They're going to prophesy. Your old men are going to dream dreams. This is that. It's in the New Testament.
Signs That Follow Believers
SPEAKER_01: But Mark's Gospel, chapter 16, verse 17. Always remember that anytime the Spirit of God moves, as a believer, you need to allow the Spirit of God to move in your life. If there's any resistance to the Spirit of God, that is not God resisting. That is the human nature. That is the flesh. That's what's resisting. Or demonic spirits. Because I have found that the more spiritually depth you go, the spirits will act up more. That's been my experience. In Mark's Gospel, chapter 16, verse 17, Jesus said this, he must have preached this quite often.
SPEAKER_01: These signs shall follow them that believe. In my name, they shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. That is powerful anointed scriptures. This is the Holy Ghost in action. This is the Holy Spirit being manifested.
SPEAKER_01: I would think it to the natural mind of all the gifts of the Spirit, tongues would be the one that they would shy away from the most. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 10, and we cannot cut this out. You cannot take a pair of scissors or a knife and cut this out of the Bible and say, either I'm not going to believe that, or take the page and rip it out altogether. Or get somebody to declare that this word is null and void now. Some man. But anyway, to another diver, so that means many kinds of tongues.
SPEAKER_01: Says that in 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 10.
What Tongues Are For
SPEAKER_01: That's what God gave. What's the good of tongues? But 1 Corinthians chapter 14 and verse 2, he that speaketh in a non-knowing tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God. There's that about tongues. I've heard it said that when you talk in tongues and pray in tongues, the devil doesn't know what you're saying, because they base it upon here, so he can't get in the way and slow it down. Could be.
SPEAKER_01: So it can be German, Chinese, whatever. But the word speaking, it doesn't mean in your mind. It's not something you're going to say, okay, I've got it. I'm speaking this to myself. God can hear me. The word speaking means uttering, this is the Greek, uttering words. I'm going to take it a bit further. When the term hear you, speaking, it means emit a sound. A sound comes out. And that's what was happening in the upper rooms. This is quite consistent. Paul said in 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verse 5, he said, I would that you all spoke with tongues.
SPEAKER_01: Now he did qualify and go on to say that it would be much more beneficial for us to speak and prophesy and speak in our native tongue. 1 Corinthians 14, 6. Now, this is quite interesting right here in 1 Corinthians 14. We get a lot about tongues. We find that tongues is of profit when what happens? Why would we possibly want tongues? And why would it come in tongues? Why would it do that? Oftentimes, revelation will come through tongues. God will speak a revelation.
SPEAKER_01: Maybe some people don't like tongues, may get up and run out of the building. Or maybe some people, when they hear tongues, they just shut down and they won't listen to anymore. I believe that God's very careful who he gives what revelation to. And it could be that if you got this mindset, or if somebody has this mindset, and they're going to say, I like all. Oh, so you're saying what? There are seven gifts. Because tongues and interpretation of tongues, people don't like those, so let's take those away.
SPEAKER_01: So now in their mind, there's only seven gifts that the Holy Spirit gives. But that's not true. There are nine gifts, and tongues is one of the nine gifts. According to 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verse 6, tongues is of profit when knowledge is released.
When Tongues Need Interpretation
SPEAKER_01: You might be praying for somebody, and all of a sudden you'll start speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit will start speaking in tongues. And we know that if tongues is spoken, then there needs to be an interpretation. And it could be that when an interpretation comes, the people are going to be able to connect this knowledge that they just got with tongues, and it's going to really stick here, and they're going to get a good grasp on this. Because listen, if you get knowledge and truth, how much better does it get when it comes directly from the Holy Spirit to you?
SPEAKER_01: And when the sound is emitted, you're listening to me now as a preacher, and you're listening to my words, and my job is to declare the word of the Lord. God's job is to reveal it to you and to make it real. We know that when tongues is of profit, it will be a prophecy. Isn't prophecy only in the native language? No. Prophecy often will come interpretation. That will be prophecy. And by doctrine, 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verse 13, let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
SPEAKER_01: I have witnessed where tongues have been spoken in a congregation, and nobody would interpret. None. I have witnessed where tongues are spoken, and I've heard maybe somebody they'll try to get up who gets in first to interpret. And I've heard tongues spoken in a meeting, and the speaker that's speaking will immediately switch into English, in my case, that I under I speak English. And they would slap the tongues and they go straight in to interpretation. I've witnessed that. I've seen that. I know that sometimes when we're working with in a public setting and we're ministering, whatnot, and the Lord will show you things.
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you as the minister, me as the minister, when I'm praying for people, I'll sometimes switch into tongues just for a moment, and then I'll keep moving on because it'd be something personal that I'm speaking into that person's spirit, or I'm dealing with a blockage that is there. Tongues is quite beneficial.
SPEAKER_01: God offers you nothing unless he knows you're ready. You're gonna think, I don't know if I'm ready for this. If God offered it to you, you are ready. Truth, revelation, his word, anything he opens up to us when he shows it, take it right now. Take it right now. I I gotta get into interpretation here. In First Corinthians chapter twelve, verse ten, it says this. To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
SPEAKER_01: First Corinthians chapter twelve, verse ten.
SPEAKER_01: Be careful you do not ignore or reject this or any of the gifts. Don't ever reject, because the moment you start rejecting, you are on a very greasy slope.
Order In Church And True Edification
SPEAKER_01: In First Corinthians chapter fourteen, verses twenty-six and twenty-seven. How is it then, brethren, when you come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, half a tongue, hath a revelation, half an interpretation? Let all things be done unto edifying. As in verse 27, if any man speak in an unknowing tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course, and let one interpret. How do you do it? I've heard people say, How many messages of tongues are is somebody allowed to say?
SPEAKER_01: Can I get up five different times? And like I'll get up once and I speak in tongues, and I sit back down, and somebody else stands up and interpret, and then I get up a second time and I speak in tongues. And how many times can we keep doing this? In order to have order to keep the meeting flowing, they're saying twice or three times. I would take that. Some may interpret this and say two or three people could do this, but they could. But I think it has to be done in order. And the interpretation that comes, this is critical.
SPEAKER_01: This is how you are going to know that if it's a true interpretation, it will edify the body of Christ. According to 1 Corinthians 14 5, when someone speaks in tongues in a church gathering, the gift of tongues becomes effective when somebody receives the interpretation. But there it talks about edification, interpretation, and comfort. When the message brings that, then you know it's from God. So can I talk to you about interpretation in the scripture? See, I preach in countries where I have an interpreter.
SPEAKER_01: Somebody stands beside me, and that individual speaks in Spanish.
Interpretation Belongs To God
SPEAKER_01: I'm preaching in English because I can't speak Spanish. So they will interpret for me. And I've done many countries like that. But this interpretation is talking about the interpretation of tongues. In Genesis chapter 40, verse 8, and they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream. They're talking to Joseph here, and there's no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me then, I pray you. Already, back in the book of Genesis, we are told that interpretation is of God.
SPEAKER_01: Just as much as moving in miracles or anything else, it is of God. Interpretation comes to us from God. I trust that you have received the word and that you are open to receive from God. Amen.
